SCOPH, the Standing Committee on Public Health, is a forum for medical students who work together to improve public awareness concerning public and global health issues. By tackling unhealthy lifestyles and creating knowledge about community diseases, we try to improve the Public Health in Egypt. Our mission is to offer Egypt’s future physicians a comprehensive introduction to public health issues, who will in turn improve public health awareness and advocate for health equity. We are dedicated to try to influence the public health status in Egypt.
Non-communicable Diseases:
NCDs are a massive burden, in many countries including Egypt and a rising burden. Main NCDs are mainly driven by the 4 big risk factors, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets and tobacco use, and they are interrelated, but all of that is rooted in environment, policy choices and social determinants, and there are other risk factors than the other risk factors: pollution, indoor cooking fires, lack of breastfeeding, poor nutritional options, etc. Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and respiratory diseases pose one of the biggest burdens of diseases worldwide in high income countries as much as in low income countries
Every 14th of November, 4th of February, 31st of May and 30th of September IFMSA Egypt celebrates the World Diabetes Day, World Cancer Day, World No Tobacco Day and World Heart Day respectively in order to raise awareness of the issues, increase research in the field of NCDs, mobilize the public and set policies and recommendations for stakeholders to combat NCDs.
